the fact that the estate agent says don't make any trouble implies that they did find bodies in paul's apartment, so that was real. yeah the lawyer does say that he had dinner with paul but one of the main themes of this book is mistaken identity, all the people are very similar and people are constantly getting other people's name wrong, so the lawyer may have mistaken paul for someone else. i don't think we ever supposed to really know, the author made it ambiguous on purpose.
